Centro de Interpretación del Trogloditismo Algarbes y Camariles
The Centre is dedicated to interpreting troglodyticism, or the practice of living underground. The initiative began with the Town Hall's restoration of the cave complex. The Camariles are a series of man-made holes cut into the sides of cliffs at different heights and facing east. In early time the algarves came to be used as dwellings. Later, during the Nasrid period, additional rooms such as haylofts were added. This complex consists of 14 caves which were inhabited until the 1980s. A vistor to the centre can view a 'living cave', where audiovisual media recreates scenes from the past. Each room focuses on a specific theme and houses a collection of historical materials. The centre is open by appointment only. Tel: 958 67 01 35. It is located on Calle Rambla.
